Michelle Carter reached her life’s goal in 2016 by winning gold in the Rio Olympic Games.

Beginning her throwing career in 1997 while in junior high school, Michelle is a three-time Olympian as well as a World Championship gold medalist. She has excelled at the national and international levels for 20+ years.

While still in high school, Michelle captured eight Texas State U.I.L. titles in the shot put and discus as well as two national girls’ shot put records and the Texas state record in the discus. 

Michelle first donned the USA jersey at the 2001 World Youth Championships where she won silver and has been collecting Team U.S.A. Jerseys ever since. In 2008 she followed in the footsteps of her father by making her first Olympic Team.

Michelle completed an epic double in 2013, capturing gold at the USA Indoor and USA Outdoor Championships as well as setting her first American record.  In 2015, she won her sixth USATF Outdoor Championship en route to winning the bronze medal at IAAF World Championships in Beijing.

Michelle won gold at the 2016 World Indoor Championships in Portland, but her crowning achievement was at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, when Michelle succeeded at winning the gold medal and setting the American record at the event. Michelle became the first United States female athlete to win the event since the women’s shot put competition began in 1948.

Personal: 

Raised in Texas, Michelle is the oldest child of Michael and Sandra Carter. Her father won the men’s shot put silver medal while representing Team USA at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games and also played professional American football for the San Francisco 49ers from 1984 to 1992, winning three Super Bowls and earning three Pro Bowl team selections.

Michelle competed with her high school choir at the state level and enjoys singing, baking, fashion, hair, and makeup. Michelle received a full-track scholarship to The University of Texas, where she graduated in 2007 with a B.A. degree in Youth and Communities Studies, and a minor in Kinesiology.  Michelle’s father has been her only coach throughout her shot put career. She is known to affectionately refer to him as “Coach Daddy” and they are often requested to speak about their extraordinarily successful coach/father–athlete/daughter relationship to media and groups.

Shot Diva:

Michelle Carter has spoken to diverse groups on topics of positive body image, goal setting, and self-confidence. Her recent appearances include the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Creative Convening” in New York City, the Rachel Ray Show, and the United State of Women.  Michelle is “all diva” which explains her love of being a certified professional makeup artist with an interest in beauty and fashion. With her special flair, she uniquely blends her passion for throwing with beauty leading her fans to enthusiastically embrace her as the “ShotDiva”.
